  1.         Diversi-COPY(tm) For Unidisk 3.5 Instructions
  2.  
  3. *** Making Copies ***
  4.  
  5. Diversi-Copy for the Unidisk 3.5 is a separate program included on
  6. the Diversi-Copy disk. This program is called "UCOPY".  You can use 
  7. the UniDisk 3.3 System Utilities disk to transfer "UCOPY" to any 
  8. ProDOS disk, and execute it with a "BRUN UCOPY" command.
  9.  
  10. When you run the UCOPY program, it automatically finds the slot where 
  11. your Unidisk 3.5 is located. The copying process works very much 
  12. like Diversi-Copy for floppy disks. You may make 1-drive copies, or 
  13. 2-drive copies (if you have 2 Unidisks).
  14.  
  15. *** 1-Drive Copies ***
  16.  
  17. To make a 1-drive copy, insert your original disk in Unidisk drive #1
  18. and hit <space>. The program will prompt you with screen messages
  19. and beeps. You may hit 'S' to turn the beeps off and on.
  20.  
  21. The program will read as much of the original disk into memory as 
  22. possible, and then prompt you to insert your duplicate disk. If 
  23. needed, the program will prompt you to re-insert the original and
  24. duplicate disks, until the copy is complete.
  25.  
  26. Note that with the Undisk 3.5, the disk is automatically ejected for
  27. you. If a disk ejects partially, however, don't pull it out further.
  28. Push it all the way back in, and press the disk eject button. This
  29. will avoid damaging the disk.
  30.  
  31. To avoid writing onto your original by mistake, you may want to write
  32. protect it by sliding the tab on the disk so the write protect hole
  33. is open. The write protect hole on your duplicate must be closed, of
  34. course.
  35.  
  36. *** 2-Drive Copies ***
  37.  
  38. Put your original in drive #1, and your duplicate in drive #2. Press
  39. <return> to begin copying. Both disks are ejected when copying is 
  40. complete.
  41.  
  42. *** Copy Features ***
  43.  
  44. When copying ProDOS or Pascal disks, Diversi-Copy skips all unused 
  45. blocks, as shown by the disk directory. This greatly speeds up the 
  46. copying process, unless your disk is nearly full.
  47.  
  48. If you want to copy these unused blocks for some reason, press "="
  49. from the main menu (the one that says "Insert Original Disk in Drive
  50. #1").
  51.  
  52. In addition, whenever Diversi-Copy reads a block of all 0's, it skips 
  53. writing that block on the duplicate. This is very helpful when your 
  54. disk is not Pascal or ProDOS, or when you have large empty files on
  55. the disk.
  56.  
  57. Before writing to a Unidisk 3.5, Diversi-Copy automatically formats
  58. the disk. This takes about 45 seconds per disk, in addition to the
  59. write time. When copying onto a "virgin" disk, i.e. right out of
  60. the box, this step is necessary.
  61.  
  62. However, if you are re-writing over a disk that already has data on
  63. it, you can skip this format step by pressing "F" from the main menu.
  64. Press "F" again to restore formatting. Note:  If you skip the
  65. formatting, then blocks of all 0's must still be written.
  66.  
  67. *** Halting ***
  68.  
  69. Hit <DELETE> to cancel a disk read or write in progress.  You can 
  70. also hit the disk eject button to force an I/O error.
  71.  
  72. *** Extra Memory ***
  73.  
  74. Diversi-Copy for the Unidisk 3.5 will automatically find and use any 
  75. extra memory card that plugs into the auxillary slot on the Apple 
  76. //e. It also will work with any of the expansion boards for the 
  77. Apple //c. We recommend the Ramworks II and Z-RAM cards from Applied
  78. Engineering (214 241-6060). Memory cards from Legend, Checkmate, and
  79. Titan will also work.
  80.  
  81. In addition, the program recognizes the Apple II Memory Expansion 
  82. Card, which plugs into slots 1..7. Applied Engineering also makes a
  83. card called "Ramfactor" which is fully compatible.
  84.  
  85. Note: To prevent Diversi-Copy from using your peripheral slot RAM 
  86. card, press "B" from the Diversi-Copy boot menu, before choosing the
  87. type of disk you want to copy.
  88.  
  89. If possible, try to get 1 megabyte of extra memory. This will insure 
  90. that you can copy or mass-produce any 800K, 3.5 inch disk in one
  91. pass.
  92.  
  93. *** Apple //GS ***
  94.  
  95. Diversi-Copy uses the Apple //GS built-in 256K memory, and any memory 
  96. plugged into the //GS memory expansion slot.  Diversi-Copy works with 
  97. the new Apple Disk 3.5, as well as the UniDisk 3.5 connected to the 
  98. //GS.
  99.  
  100. We recommend the Apple //GS with a single Apple Disk 3.5.  Then buy a 
  101. 1-megabyte Apple RAM card, or the GS-RAM (or GS-RAM plus) from
  102. Applied Engineering.  This memory will allow 1-pass copying of any
  103. disk, and will be very useful for future //GS programs.
  104.  
  105. Diversi-Copy will NOT use or destroy the memory on peripheral slot
  106. RAM cards in the Apple //GS.
  107.  
  108. *** Screen Display ***
  109.  
  110. The bottom line on the screen shows the progress of your copy. The 
  111. number at the left is the read block, which goes from 0000 to 1600 as 
  112. the program reads in your original. To the right of this is the
  113. write block, which also goes from 0000 to 1600 when writing the
  114. duplicate.
  115.  
  116. When you press "=" or "F" from the main menu, this is also shown on 
  117. the bottom line.
  118.  
  119. The number of successful copies written is shown at the right. Press 
  120. "R" from any menu to restore it to 0000.
  121.  
  122. *** Mass Production ***
  123.  
  124. Put your original disk in drive #1 and hit 'M'. Diversi-COPY will
  125. read this original disk into memory and hold it. You can then write
  126. multiple copies from memory without re-reading the original. If the
  127. original disk does not fit into the available memory, the program
  128. displays an error message. Otherwise, you will hear 2 beeps and see
  129. a new menu.
  130.  
  131. On a 1-drive system, put a blank disk in drive #1 and hit <space> to
  132. write each copy. On a 2-drive system, put blank disks in drives #1
  133. and #2 and hit 'A'. Diversi-COPY will write to drive #1 and #2
  134. alternately until you hit <ESC> or get a write error. You never have
  135. to touch the keyboard. While Diversi-COPY is writing to drive #2,
  136. put a new disk in drive #1, and vice-versa.
  137.  
  138. *** Errors ***
  139.  
  140. When something goes wrong in the copy process, Diversi-Copy will 
  141. print an error number and explanation. If you forget to insert a 
  142. disk, you will see the "OffLine - No Disk in Drive" error. Just 
  143. insert the disk and try again.
  144.  
  145. If you try to write to a disk with the write-protect hole open, you 
  146. will see the "NoWrite - Disk Write Protected" error. Slide the 
  147. write-protect tab over the hole and try again (if you really wanted 
  148. to write on this disk).
  149.  
  150. The other error you are likely to see is the "I/O Error". 
  151. Frequently, this is caused when the disk did not insert properly. 
  152. Try pushing the eject button, and re-inserting the disk.
  153.  
  154. The I/O error will also occur if you try to read a "virgin" disk as 
  155. an original, or if you try to write onto a "virgin" disk without
  156. formatting.  If the disk is copy-protected, it will also give an I/O 
  157. read error.
  158.  
  159. Finally, some I/O errors are caused by defective, damaged, scratched,
  160. or just worn-out disks. Hopefully, you will have used Diversi-Copy 
  161. to back-up these disks before this happens.
  162.  
  163. When you get an I/O error during reading, Diversi-Copy will stop and 
  164. ask you to press "T" if you want to try to read the block again.  
  165. Hit <SPACE> to cancel the copy, or "I" to ignore the bad block.  If
  166. you hit "I", then a block of all "0" will be substituted for the bad
  167. block.  The file which contains this block will be partially lost.
  168.  
  169. Programmers Note:  To substitute a byte other than "0" in bad blocks:

  172. POKE 6147,X (where X=0..255 / try X=32 for text files)

  174.  
  175. *** Transferring Diversi-Copy to a 3.5 Inch Disk ***
  176.  
  177. Diversi-Copy is sold only on a 5.25 inch floppy disk.  You can make a 
  178. 3.5 inch Diversi-Copy disk as follows.
  179.  
  180. 1.  Boot the Apple II System Utilities disk supplied with your 3.5 
  181. inch drive (write protect it first).
  182.  
  183. 2.  Choose the option to format a ProDOS disk.  Just follow the 
  184. menus carefully.  Insert a blank 3.5 inch disk when prompted to do 
  185. so by the Utility program.
  186.  
  187. 3.  After formatting, hit ESC to get to the Utility menu.  Now choose
  188. the "Copy Files" option.  If you have only one 3.5 inch disk, your
  189. source and destination disk slot and drive are the same (usually Slot
  190. #5, Drive #1).  With a second UniDisk 3.5, the destination is drive
  191. #2.  Leave your Utility disk in the drive, and choose the option to
  192. copy "Some" of the files.  Mark the files names "ProDOS" and
  193. "BASIC.SYSTEM".  On a one drive system, the Utility program will stop
  194. when it wants you to insert the destination disk, or re-insert the
  195. Utility disk (the prompting is poor, but just keep swapping disks).
  196. Now, you should have a 3.5 inch ProDOS disk with the files "PRODOS"
  197. and "BASIC.SYSTEM" on it.
  198.  
  199. 3.  Now, insert the 5.25 inch Diversi-Copy disk in your floppy drive. 
  200. Choose the "Copy Files" option again, but this time enter your floppy 
  201. drive as the source (usually slot #6, drive #1).  Insert your new 3.5 
  202. inch disk in its drive, and enter it as the destination (usually 
  203. Slot #5, Drive #1).  Now choose the option to copy all files.
  204.  
  205. 4.  Finally, go back to the Utility menu and choose the "Rename" 
  206. option.  Rename the file "UHELLO" to the new name "STARTUP".
  207.  
  208. When you boot your new 3.5 inch Diversi-Copy disk, it will behave 
  209. exactly like the 5.25 inch version.  Of course, now you should use
  210. Diversi-Copy to back-up itself!
  211.  
  212. If you don't have a 5.25 inch drive, take this disk to your Apple
  213. dealer along with a 3.5 inch disk, and ask him to do the transfer.  
  214. If you're in this position, we recommend you buy the 5.25 inch drive
  215. from Applied Engineering (you'll need it for many other programs).
  216.  
  217. *** Single-Sided Disks ***
  218.  
  219. If you press "*" from the main menu, Diversi-Copy will only read and 
  220. write to half the disk (800 blocks).  Don't use this feature with 
  221. Apple disks.
  222.  
  223. Warning: Diversi-Copy will appear to copy Macintosh disks, but does 
  224. not actually copy the 12 extra bytes in each block.  Don't use 
  225. Diversi-Copy for Macintosh disks!
  226.  
  227. *** User Support ***
  228.

  241. *** Multiple Computers ***
  242.  
  243. Diversi-COPY may be copied and used on all computers owned by a
  244. single individual, company, school district, or goverment agency,
  245. without additional fee, subject to the following restrictions:
  246.  
  247. 1. All computers must be located within a 25 mile radius, or local
  248. phone calling area. I.E. corporations with branches in different
  249. cities should buy 1 copy for each city.
  250.  
  251. 2. Each user support number entitles only ONE individual to call or
  252. write to DSR for support.
